ANOTHER DOODLE BREED?!? What is an Australian Mountain Doodle and why this one is different.

Updated: Sep 30, 2021

DOODLES, WHAT ARE THEY?

Doodle hybrids are taking the dog world by storm, we are seeing all kinds of variations between the beloved poodle and other breeds at an alarming rate, there are at least 37 different kinds of Doodle breed variations!

From what we know, the first Doodle breed was the Cockapoo, a Cocker Spaniel x Poodle hybrid, who showed up around 1960. Whether the Cockapoo breed was planned or a happy accident is relatively unknown. Like any attempts at breeding and mixing different dogs, the end goal is to combine the favorable qualities of each breed, making one, extra favorable dog & breed. As the crossbreeding yielded positive results with the Cockapoos, other breeds were brought into the Poodle equation, years later leaving us with quite the Doodle family tree.

GET TO THE POINT

Okay, okay, enough with the history lesson. Australian Mountain Doodle is actually a tri-hybrid combining 3 great dog breeds. The Australian Shepard, The Bernese Mountain Dog, and the Poodle. If you don't know about these amazing breeds I will give you a very quick overview:

  • The Australian Shepard is a working breed specifically for herding. They are considered one of the most intelligent dogs and you will see a lot of this breed in dog trick competitions. They have an incredibly high prey drive and and a high energy animal, making it unsuitable for small laid back home environments. One of the things that draw people to this breed is it's stunning tri-color and merle coat colorations and their brilliant baby blue eyes and incredible doggy smarts.

  • The Bernese Mountain Dog is a big, powerful breed, and built for hard work. They are also strikingly beautiful and blessed with a sweet, affectionate nature. Berners are generally placid and easy-going but are always up for a romp with the owner, whom they live to please. The thick, silky, and moderately long coat is tricolored: jet black, clear white, and rust. The distinctive markings on the coat and face are breed hallmarks making this dog a classic beauty.

  • The Poodle is a an aristocratic breed that stands out proudly amongst other breeds. Originally bred for hunting and waterfowl retrieving they have become increasingly well-known for their high intelligence, hypoallergenic qualities, and capability of being great service dogs. They are an elegant athlete and companion for all reasons and seasons.

Now Australian Mountain Doodles are a combination of these great breeds and all of their wonderful qualities! Because Doodles are not, and will never be, a standardized breed you will find many breeders will combine these three dogs in different ways. Some will take an Aussiedoodle and a Bernedoodle and pair them or AMD (Aussie Mountain Dog) and a poodle and do it that way.

Here at Doodles Elite we prefer to breed the AMD and the poodle together. This helps us better control the size of the dogs as we do not want to breed overly-large dogs that will ultimately have a shorter lifespan. We try to ensure you have your fur-baby as long as possible and the smaller the breed the longer the life-span.

WHAT MAKES THE AUSTRALIAN MOUNTAIN DOODLE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER BREEDS?

Everyone loves blue eyes and merle and tri-color coats right? so why not just an Aussiedoodle? The reason behind this is that you are pairing 2 very high energy, highly intelligent breeds together to produce a high-energy, incredibly intelligent hybrid. These dogs are great for homes that have lots of land and time to dedicate to these beautiful dogs, but not all homes are capable of handling a working dog hybrid that has this much extra energy, This is where our beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog comes in! Berners are also very intelligent and have great endurance, but with that endurance comes a more patient and mellow temperament that allows this dog to pace itself all day long. This brings that incredibly high energy to a more manageable level, and for all you athletic folks out there don't discount this breed! they will be great running, hiking and biking partners, but at the end of they day they can chill and relax on the couch with the family without bouncing off the walls 24/7.

LASTLY

Ultimately, the one thing you must realize is that whether you are looking for a pure-bred or a hybrid dog you MUST do your homework on the breeder. Health testing is a must to ensure your puppy does not have any defects, or abnormalities that should have never been passed down the gene pool. I have known purebred breeders to be just as sketchy as some backyard hybrid breeders, so please, don't just take the standardized breeds and believe all dog breeders will uphold the qualities of being a good and ethical dog breeder because they don't. Hybrids are no less and no more healthy than purebreds if the breeders are doing it right, it is all about the health and genetic testings to ensure sound offspring. I encourage you all to do your homework, talk to your breeder and be well-educated on the breed you are selecting before every going into an agreement to take a puppy. We love our purebreds and we love our hybrids; each has amazing qualities.
